The Forest, by Endnight Games, is a new upcoming survival horror crafting game, made for PC with Oculus Rift support. The release date for the alpha is May 22, 2014.
With the creation of Minecraft, many new games began focusing on the survival crafting genre. Games like DayZ and 7 Days to Die introduced the idea of games with a horror edge as a certain type of enemy hunts you in the dark. The Forest combines both these ideas, making a game where during the day you chop down trees and explore, and at night bunker down in your fortified base where the things of the night try to break through and eat you. The game itself has amazing graphics and a beautiful feel to it.
The story line of The Forest is that you are a plane crash survivor on an island that you think is deserted. However, as night comes, the island's native cannibals come out of hiding and try to make you their dinner. During the day you must fortify your shelter and at night try and make sure your defenses hold as blood thirsty cannibals try to hunt you down. As you progress in the game, you explore the caves where the cannibals come from and find some gruesome mutants down there as well.
However, if you're interested in the simple gathering and crafting in the game, there is a peaceful mode. There is no planned support for consoles and the game is planned for alpha release on May 22, 2014.
